About Papulankutja Artists

Papulankutja Artists x Mantamaru Artists is an Aboriginal-owned, not-for-profit art centre based in Papulankutja (Blackstone) Community, on the Ngaanyatjarra Lands in remote Western Australia — approximately 900 km west of Alice Springs and 1,575 km north-east of Perth.

Originally established as a women’s centre in the 1980s, the art centre became a place where both men and women were encouraged to paint and share their stories. As the Aboriginal art market grew, the need for a structure that protected artists became clear. Papulankutja Artists was officially incorporated in 2003 and moved into a purpose-built facility in 2009. Today, the art centre also supports artists in nearby Mantamaru (Jameson) Community, 75 km to the west.

Papulankutja Artists provides a culturally safe space for Ngaanyatjarra and other Anangu artists to express Tjukurrpa (Dreaming) through creative practice, to earn independent income, and to strengthen social and cultural well-being. Artists work across a range of mediums including acrylic painting, tjanpi weaving, purnu (carved wood), bush jewelry, and our signature bush medicine soaps — handmade with locally gathered healing plants.

Artists from Papulankutja have contributed to major national exhibitions including Songlines: Tracking the Seven Sisters, Ngurra, Desert Mob, Tarnanthi, Revealed, and the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DAAF).

The art centre is proud to work closely with peak bodies Desart and AACHWA to maintain strong governance and to support training and development for artists, arts workers, and board members.

Our vision is to continue growing a sustainable art business, nurturing the next generation, and keeping culture strong through art.
