Alan Douglas
Karungkarni Art and CultureBorn in Darwin and grew up on Wave Hill Station. Alan worked at Jamangku (New Wave Hill Station) as a stockman from the age of 19 years.
Alan’s Country is Nitjpurru (Pigeonhole) – Gurindji/Ngarinyman language group. Grandmother from Broome – East Timor and came out to work in pearling industry. Alan’s Grandfather was living at Hall’s Creek. Mother is from Wyndham/Kununurra/Halls Creek.
Walked off Wave Hill Station with his grandmother, carrying the billycan. They camped down out the Victoria River crossing in what is now Kalkarindji. Went to Korrmilda College and the Bachelor College to learn about health in Darwin. He returned to work in the Old Kalkarindji Clinic as a nurse.
Alan’s father was an artist who did landscape paintings and Alan learned from him. They would sell their artworks to the truck drivers and hawkers.
