Tatum Rivers-Purdie (b. 1994) is an emerging Gija artist whose work carries the strength of generations before her. Born to Madeline Purdie, a third-generation Gija artist, and RonaldRivers from Halls Creek, Tatum is deeply rooted in her family’s legacy of storytelling and artistic expression. As the great-granddaughter of the late Madigan Thomas and granddaughter of Shirley Purdie- Warmun’s esteemed senior Gija elder, cultural leader, teacher, author, and acclaimed artist—Tatum’s journey as a painter is a continuation of a powerful artistic lineage.A fourth-generation Warmun artist, Tatum began painting in 2021, drawing inspiration from the stories passed down through her family. Her works reflect the landscapes and histories of Guda Guda Country, capturing the profound connection between land, culture, and the Ngarranggarni (Dreaming). Each brushstroke is an act of remembrance, keeping alive the teachings of her great-grandmother and grandmother through contemporary expression.Tatum’s art is a celebration of her Gija heritage. She frequently paints Ant Hills, a sacred symbol in Gija culture, revered as a source of bush tucker, bush medicine, and integral to cultural ceremonies. Another central theme in her work is Kilkayi (Barramundi Dreaming), which ties into the legacy of Pink Diamonds and the Argyle Mine, exploring narratives of land rehabilitation, resilience, and healing. Her paintings, infused with a vibrant modern sensibility, invite viewers into the deep spiritual and historical landscapes of her people.Tatum’s deep connection to family is at the heart of her journey. She is devoted to nurturing the next generation, sharing cultural knowledge and stories with her son, nieces, and nephews. Growing up alongside her three brothers, she carries forward the strength of her family’s legacy, weaving their shared history and traditions into her art.As a new voice in Gija art, Tatum Rivers-Purdie stands as a beacon of cultural pride and artistic innovation.
