These woven fish traps are made using techniques passed down through generations of Yolŋu women. Traditionally used for catching small fish in the tidal shallows around Milingimbi Island and surrounding Arnhem Land areas, they are crafted from natural fibres such as Miwana (grass), jungle vine, or gunga (pandanus) harvested by hand from bush and freshwater sites.

The process begins with women walking out to collect the right materials—sometimes traveling long distances—then stripping, soaking, and preparing the fibres before weaving begins. The shape and size of the trap is carefully considered to suit the water conditions and target fish. Woven tightly and with great strength, each trap is both a functional tool and today a work of art.

While today these traps are no longer used for everyday fishing the knowledge, skill, and cultural stories embedded in their making remain strong. Weaving together past and present, they speak of Yolŋu connection to sea, country, and the rhythms of tidal life.
