This is my family’s Country. I was born near the billabong. This area I have painted is Ivanhoe crossing where we used to walk, fish and swim when I was child. The billabong at the old Ivanhoe station was we used to eat turtle, little perches and waterlily. The water Lilly has three edible parts – the root, the stem and the flowers. This was important bush food for us when we used walk across country. There was good bush tucker in the river too – lot’s of fish – those days were good and we were free to cross. You didn’t have to think about crocodiles in those days. I love my Country. When I paint it reminds me of the elders who taught us how to hunt for food and tell us stories about our Country.
