This painting by Dylan Miller-Poulson Japangardi depicts a popular fruit called kalngi (bush tomato). Dylan was taught this Dreaming design by his mother, grandmother and father’s father who are from the Tanami Desert region. The bush tomato grows in the desert areas of central and northern Australia. Bush tomatoes are an excellent source of nutrition and a much sought after food. The fruit are eaten after the wet season when they turn yellowish green. When the fruit is opened and the black seeds cleaned out, the flesh and skin are eaten. The small flowers are a bright purple.

Women collect the fruit in their carved wooden kawarla (coolamon).

Dylan’s use of vivid colour describes the country at the time the bush tomato fruit is ripe. The red, yellow and purple interlocking colours reveal the patches of blooming wildflowers and the green of new grass after the rains. The design is a cross-section of the bush tomato plant as seen from an aerial perspective.
