This painting depicts a popular fruit called kalngi (bush tomato). Rosemary was taught this Dreaming design by her father and kaku (father’s father) who are from Lajamanu in the Tanami Desert area. Bush tomato grow in the desert areas of central and northern Australia. They are an excellent source of nutrition and a much sought after food. The fruit are eaten after the wet season when they turn yellowish green. When the fruit is opened and the black seeds cleaned out, the flesh and skin are eaten. The small flowers are a bright purple. Women (represented in this paintings with a ‘U’ shape) collect the fruit in their carved wooden kawarla (coolamon – represented by oval shape).
