Kulyuyu (kulyulyurra), the small green budgerigar is Rosemary’s father’s totem. Rosemary paints the birds as they are nesting in a large gum tree with a white trunk. You can see the birds as they fly in large locks around the sky. In the past they were hunted in the dry season using a piece of heavy curved wire, a heavy stick or a boomerang. To collect the eggs the tree trunk is chopped with an axe to widen the opening, as the nest is deep in the tree. The birds were lightly roasted before eating.
