This painting depicts a story from the artsists grandfather Ŋulmarmar who told it as a bedtime to Djipurrtjun and his wäwa (brother). Ŋulmarmar was born in 1911 and died c. 1977. He was a Ganalbiŋu Malibirr man with ties to both Milingimbi and Ramangining.

Matthew explains the war stories are about WWI and WWII. “He was telling me bedtime story, gun story and war story”.

“My grandthfather, he was asleep at nighttime, but then he was dreaming, that plane and that gun and he was making sounds. Sometimes he was dreaming that song – for Japan and black people. Their dream come true”. Ŋulmarmar dreamed about the war and the sounds of planes and guns before it happened.

“This manikay is for – everyone can dance this gun story”, märriyaŋ story.
