The Spirit Poles are a representation of ancestral presence, cultural endurance, and artistic transformation. By repurposing didgeridoos, David reimagines a traditional instrument into a symbol of spiritual guardianship and cultural strength. While creating these pieces, I felt a strong connection to my ancestors and the landscapes that have shaped my people’s stories. The process of transforming the didgeridoos was an act of respect and continuation of culture. The practice is centered on preserving and sharing Indigenous traditions. This work serves as both an artistic expression and a cultural responsibility, ensuring that stories, knowledge, and traditions are carried forward.
Symbolism in the Artwork:
• Ochre markings represent sacred storytelling and Country
• Feathers symbolise spiritual guidance and ancestral presence
• The didgeridoo form honours the history of music, ceremony, and communication within Indigenous culture.
Through these Spirit Poles, David Hudson invites the audience to reflect on the importance of tradition, adaptation, and cultural perseverance in today’s world.
