This is the story of one rainy yet calm water and I decided to go hunting in the rainy weather, because I don’t see any other kids out hunting regularly, they are always looking at their phones. This time I went out hunting to get away from the humbug from family and happily got mud crab. In the mating season mud crab go out in the sea and travel to different lands for mating. Along the way I saw a maranydjalk (stingray) and djinydjalma (mud crab) that were cruising along the banks. I speared the crab but not the stingray because my spear was not big enough.

On this particular day I was able to not only spear a mud crab but also a good size stingray but did not get it for my spear being too small.

This print is part of the series ‘Young Power’. It is Yuṯa Djäma (new work). This series features work by seven young and emergign Yolŋu artists, and is the result of a workshop facilitated by master printmaker Annie Studd with Munuy’ŋu Marika and Bitharr Maymuru of the Yirrkala Print Space. The project was partly based upon earlier such workshops, including ‘Ŋarra’ (me) from 2011, which had an emphasis upon digital rendering of self-portraits taken by the artists which evoked their personal identity.
